Surgical & Non-Surgical Rhinoplasty: What’s The Difference?

Your nose shape, size, and projection have a considerable impact on your overall facial appearance. Rhinoplasty or a nose job can correct a pinched nose, droopy tip, bump on the bridge, or crooked septum. It is one of the most common cosmetic treatments, with nearly 1,811,754 rhinoplasties performed in the US in 2019.

When considering this treatment, there are two different option. Below, we compare the various aspects of surgical and non-surgical rhinoplasty treatments.

1. WHAT IS A SURGICAL RHINOPLASTY & A LIQUID RHINOPLASTY?
Surgical rhinoplasty or septorhinoplasty involves manipulating the skin, bone, and cartilage of the nose to resize, reshape, and refine it. The treatment is performed on an outpatient basis, so there is no need to stay overnight in a hospital. It requires the application of anesthesia before the surgeon performs an incision.

Liquid rhinoplasty improves the appearance of the nose without invasive surgery. It is a minimally invasive cosmetic treatment that involves injectable fillers to reshape the nose without surgical incisions. It can camouflage small bumps, improve symmetry, refine the nasal tip, and fill any indentations.

2. DIFFERENCES IN THESE PROCEDURES
Surgical rhinoplasty improves the shape, angle, and size of your nose. It also corrects the structural problems that restrict breathing and cause congestion. The results are long-lasting. Surgical rhinoplasty does change the appearance of your face. It may also take time for patients to adjust to the new look.

Liquid rhinoplasty improves the appearance of the face without going under the knife. It may not repair major flaws but works perfectly for minor changes. Unlike surgical rhinoplasty, liquid rhinoplasty is temporary. Results typically last six months to 2 years, depending on the type of filler used. Patients will need follow-up treatments to maintain results.

3. RIGHT CANDIDATE
For surgical rhinoplasty, a person is a suitable candidate if their nose is too large or small, crooked, poorly shaped, or out of alignment. People who have difficulty breathing or have a birth defect also opt for this procedure as a corrective treatment.

The ideal candidate for liquid rhinoplasty is a person with asymmetries, droopy tips, or bumps on the nose. However, it cannot correct a crooked or broken nose. People with breathing issues will also require a surgical rhinoplasty treatment rather than a liquid nose job.

4. RECOVERY
After a surgical rhinoplasty procedure, you will need to wear a nasal splint over the nose for support and protection from accidental bumps. Your nose will also have an internal splint to hold everything in place and keep the airway clean and free. You cannot engage in physical activities and exercise for at least three weeks after the treatment.

In contrast, liquid rhinoplasty causes minimal disruption in your lifestyle. However, you should gently massage the treated area and avoid applying pressure for one to two weeks.
