Ideal Candidates
Otoplasty can be performed at any age, however, it is common among children and is recommended before they reach elementary school. By age 6 this surgery is safe and effective to be performed on a child. If you dislike the appearance of your ears because they stick out, are too large, are misshapen, or have a visible deformity, otoplasty can help you regain a natural appearance. Surgical Technique
Cosmetic ear surgery is performed under general anesthesia. In most cases, the incision is placed behind the ear or within the inner ear folds. During surgery, cartilage will either be removed and the ear reshaped to a smaller size, or it will be added if a deformity exists. It is common for both ears to be touched during surgery to ensure they look even and appear symmetrical. Once the ears are surgically corrected, the incisions are closed with sutures and are carefully bandaged so they stay protected.
What To Expect
After surgery and once you are safe to leave the hospital, you will recover at home. It is important to not touch your ears during the first few days and to avoid laying on them during sleep. You will be advised to sleep upright for a couple of days. We typically like to see our otoplasty patients back within a week and at this time, we’ll be able to remove the bandages and assess your surgical results. The results can be seen right away and the effects of surgery will continue to improve as you heal. Most patients can resume their normal activities within 2 – 3 weeks.
