About Botox Injections

This injectable treatment with outstanding results is extremely popular among both men and women and can make a significant improvement to static lines and wrinkles on the upper face. Every time you move your face to create an expression, the muscles contract, creating lines and wrinkles, which disappear when you relax your face. As we age, these muscles become tight, causing dynamic lines and wrinkles that remain even when your face is relaxed. BOTOX is a purified strain of botulinum toxin (type A) that temporarily blocks the movements of the muscle. To correct these dynamic wrinkles, BOTOX can be injected to relax the facial muscle and smooth the skin over it. BOTOX injections are most commonly placed between the brows, the “crow’s feet” around the eyes, and the “frown lines” on the forehead.
Ideal Candidates
BOTOX injections are best for patients who want to smooth the appearance of dynamic lines and wrinkles on their face without surgery. BOTOX can also be used as a preventative treatment even if you do not show signs of aging, but tend to make a lot of facial expressions. It is a great nonsurgical solution if you have forehead wrinkles, lines between the brows, or Crow’s feet, and desire a softer appearance. If you have deeper lines in some areas, you may be a candidate for a combination of both BOTOX and a filler product. In addition, if you are older and have sagging skin that accompanies the lines and wrinkles, you may be a better candidate for a more long-term surgical solution, such as a facelift, brow lift, or eyelid lift.
Procedure Techniques
BOTOX injections are performed as an outpatient procedure directly in our office. If it is your first time to visit us about BOTOX, we usually perform the injection during the same appointment as your consultation. You will be asked to make a number of facial expressions involving the upper face, such as squinting, frowning, etc., which will allow us to see where the injections need to be placed. The skin will be cleansed and the BOTOX will be injected through a fine needle, with cold gentle compressions immediately after to help prevent bruising and discomfort. Patients may request a numbing cream or ice pack to make their treatment more comfortable, but this generally is not necessary. BOTOX injections typically take about 10-15 minutes and patients can return to their normal activities almost immediately.
What To Expect
After the injection, patients can resume their normal activities, but strenuous exercise should be avoided for at least 24 hours. Patients are also asked to sleep upright for the first night and to not touch their face, which may accidentally spread the treatment to other areas. The treated areas of the face may be slightly red, swollen, or bruised for a few days after the injection, but most patients will not experience any serious or lasting side effects from BOTOX treatments. In most patients, it generally takes about 5 – 7 days before the full effects of BOTOX are visible. The results typically last 3 – 4 months. Our patients receiving BOTOX for the first time are so happy after their first treatment and excited about their results, that we almost always continue to see them every few months for their touch-up.
