CoolSculpting and Emsculpt are two leading, non-invasive treatments that can help you get an enviable slim and sculpted appearance. Though they both aim to eliminate unwanted body fat, they differ in their methods and outcomes. CoolSculpting reduces unwanted, stubborn fat; meanwhile, Emsculpt tones and strengthens muscle.
Understanding the critical differences between these procedures is essential to make the right choice. Here, we discuss each procedure’s purpose, technology, outcomes, and safety, so you can choose the right body contouring treatment to get the shape you desire. 1. PURPOSE
COOLSCULPTING REDUCES FAT
It is the gold standard for non-surgical fat reduction treatment. Especially for patients who have stubborn fat bulges on the abs, thighs, back, hips, flanks, banana rolls, upper arms, or under the chin. In this procedure, the CoolSculpting device delivers intense cold temperatures through the skin, permanently killing a about 25-30% of the fat cells in the treated area.
EMSCULPT TONES MUSCLES
Unlike CoolSculpting, Emsculpt is a machine that makes muscles contract during the treatment, as if you were doing 20,000 crunches or 20,000 squats in a 30 minute session. The therapy builds new muscle fibers and tones existing muscles. Patients will notice residual fat reduction as a result, approximately 19% in FDA clinical trials.
Many patients combine these two treatments. First, we treat with CoolSculpting to remove the excess fat layer over the muscles and then use Emsculpt as a follow-up treatment to refine the results.
2. TECHNOLOGY
CRYOLIPOLYSIS
CoolSculpting uses a fat-freezing technology called cryolipolysis that suctions the skin and fatty tissues into cooling applicators. These applicators are then brought to a controlled temperature, which is cold enough to kill fat cells but not enough to harm the skin, muscles, or nerves.
HIGH INTENSITY FOCUSED ELECTROMAGNETIC FIELD (HIFEM)
In Emsculpt, high-intensity focused electromagnetic energy induces muscle contractions, engaging 100% muscle fibers in the treatment area. It helps to tone and strengthen the muscle faster than exercise and can be used on the buttocks, abdomen, biceps, triceps and calves. It does destroy some of the fat cells in the treated area due to the intense vibration.
3. RESULTS
GRADUAL FAT REDUCTION
In CoolSculpting, the body naturally flushes out the frozen fat cells through the lymphatic system and liver, eliminating them forever. It might take weeks before the body removes the fat cells, and patients notice results. Typically, most patients see about 80% of their results in 8 weeks. Patients must maintain a healthy lifestyle, regular exercising, and nutritious diet for the results to sustain.
THICKENING AND TONING OF MUSCLES
Emsculpt gives visible muscle tone improvements immediately, and the results continue to improve for four to five weeks after the last treatment. Patients typically have 4 treatments, two the first week and two the following week. The results have been proven to last for over a year and longer with regular exercise.
4. SAFETY
Both CoolSculpting and Emsculpt are FDA cleared. CoolSculpting has a proven track record of safety and efficacy and Emsculpt also has an outstanding safety record. Since Emsculpt it is an electromagnetic treatment, it is not safe for people with metallic or electronic implants, such as an artificial joint or a pacemaker.
Comfort levels during the treatment vary depending on the patient and the area to be treated, but CoolSculpting becomes very comfortable after the first five minutes, as it was originally approved for skin anesthesia.
