About Gynecomastia Treatment
Gynecomastia is the medical term used for male breast enlargement. It is a condition that can give the male chest a feminine appearance due to the abnormal growth of breast tissue. In most cases, gynecomastia is caused by an underlying hormone issue. It can also be caused by certain medications, steroids, excessive weight gain, or genetics. Men with this condition often feel embarrassed or self-conscious, especially in situations where the chest is exposed, such as by the pool or in the gym. Houston, TX plastic surgeon, Dr. Edward Lee, performs male breast reduction for men who have gynecomastia. This cosmetic procedure has very high success rates and is one of the leading cosmetic surgeries for men.
Ideal Candidates
Gynecomastia surgery is reserved for men who have enlarged breasts that cannot be corrected through other medical treatments, medications, diet, or exercise. If you feel bothered by the appearance of your chest, and are physically healthy and at a stable weight, you may benefit from this surgical procedure. Teenagers may also benefit from gynecomastia treatment, however a secondary procedure may be needed during adulthood if abnormal breast tissue continues to develop. During your private consultation, treatment options will be provided, including the possibility of undergoing surgery to correct the condition.
Surgical Technique
Liposuction is often used during male breast reduction surgery. Performed under general anesthesia, liposuction is first used to remove excess fat and tissue from the chest wall. The second step during this surgery is to remove any loose skin and ensure that the nipple and areola are in proper position. This requires an incision that is usually placed where the glandular tissue resides. Once the loose skin has been excised, the remaining skin and underlying tissue will be pulled to a tighter position. Not all patients will need liposuction and some may not require skin tightening. But in most cases, this surgery does involve both liposuction and excision.
What To Expect
Following gynecomastia surgery, your chest will be wrapped in a medical support bandage to help minimize swelling and bruising. In advanced cases where surgery was more invasive, a surgical tube may be inserted to help drain excess fluid. The results following treatment are immediately visible and most men find the outcomes extremely satisfying. The final results typically appear within 3 – 6 months. Any incisions that were made during surgery take time to heal, and with proper incision care they will fade and become secondary to your new masculine-appearing chest. Once the chest has healed, you are free to continue exercise and strength training which will help optimize and compliment the final results.
