Rhinoplasty

About Rhinoplasty Surgery

Rhinoplasty, also known as nose surgery, is a cosmetic procedure that is performed to enhance the appearance of the nose. It is also performed to help improve breathing function in some patients. Houston, TX plastic surgeon, Dr. Edward Lee, is board certified and fellowship-trained in facial cosmetic surgery. He performs rhinoplasty and takes a conservative approach to produce the most natural results. However, even subtle changes can be quite dramatic. Rhinoplasty can be used to make a nose appear smaller, enhance a nose that is too wide or has a bump on top, or correct noses that protrude outwork or have a hook feature. The goal is to create a more aesthetically appealing and shapelier nose that meets your specific cosmetic goals.

Ideal Candidates

Both men and women are candidates for rhinoplasty surgery. If you are unhappy with the appearance of your nose and have distinct problem areas you would like to correct or enhance, nose surgery may be the answer. It is important that your facial growth is complete, so even though teens are candidates for this procedure, this is a factor that will need to be assessed. Rhinoplasty does change the appearance of your face, so it is important to have realistic expectations and discuss your specific reasons for having this surgery during the consultation.

Surgical Techniques

Rhinoplasty is performed under general anesthesia as an outpatient procedure. Depending on your specific patient case, either an open or closed (endonasal) approach will be taken. The goal during surgery is to remove cartilage, tissue, and bone when there is too much present, or to add cartilage or bone if it is needed to help reshape the structure. The nose is repositioned and the skin re-draped to over the newly enhanced framework and sutures are placed either inside the nose or along the natural crease.

What To Expect

After nose surgery, you will be monitored carefully in the recovery area and then released to rest at home. The nose will be very swollen and bruised for the first few days. In fact, the swelling and bruising typically also occurs under the eyes. Cold compress and prescriptions medication will be provided to help control bleeding, swelling, and any discomfort. We will want to see you back for a follow-up appointment within the first 72 hours to assess the healing process. It takes about 2 – 4 weeks to recover from rhinoplasty and any strenuous activity should be avoided during this time. Rhinoplasty creates beautiful results, but it also requires a high degree of surgeon skill, as surgical artistry is needed to create the shape you want. We encourage you to do your research and discuss all of the possibilities during your initial consultation.
